Bio-oxidative Therapy: The Use of Hydrogen Peroxide and Ozone in Medical Practice

My mother always told me I was a rebel. As I gained experience outside of conventional medicine, I began to see many positive benefits of hydrogen peroxide (which includes ozone in this discussion). Basically, both of these simply stimulate the body to do what it is supposed to do. For me, this was beyond what I learned in medical school and residency training.

During my surgical practice, I had my first experience with two patients who had oxygen dependent emphysema and went for intravenous peroxide treatments. I observed that they were able to be off their oxygen for up to a month following their treatments. Then I saw a patient with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome who had markedly improved symptoms following intravenous hydrogen peroxide. After I obtained my doctorate in natural medicine, I gained my own personal experience using hydrogen peroxide with patients.

There is a lot of information involved with the use of hydrogen peroxide and ozone, so I plan to break this up into four parts. This first informational email will give the chemical background and the use of these agents in treating infections. In subsequent mailings, I will cover their usefulness in detoxification programs, cardiovascular disease, and as a supplemental treatment for cancer.

As far as a basic background, I first present:
The Many Benefits of Hydrogen Peroxide. I was a chemistry major in college, so it is easy to understand that peroxide is simply oxygenated water. We all hear about the protective ozone layer and we can see there is also the benefit of rainwater. Rainwater contains a small amount of hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide and ozone can do the same thing to protect our bodies by forming free radicals and helping eliminate toxins. Ozone also reacts with toxins to protect our environment. Ozone: emphasizes the importance of oxygen in our health and gives some background about ozone. It is a bit comprehensive, so I will break it down to the essentials.

Ozone is made up of three oxygen molecules. It is highly reactive—which means it wants to combine with other molecules. This is good as far as detoxification and antimicrobial action. We have been told free radicals are bad, but that is not necessarily so. Free radical means any substance that wants to react, good or bad, with its environment.

Ozone in the atmosphere actually protects us. Peroxide has been found in natural water sources such as the holy waters of Lourdes. Perhaps some of the miracle properties associated with these waters has to do with the peroxide. I have given examples of what I saw in patients with emphysema and chronic fatigue syndrome. Mother’s breast milk (colostrum) contains hydrogen peroxide.

White cells produce hydrogen peroxide which is antimicrobial and may benefit in fighting infection. Vitamin C causes hydrogen peroxide to be produced in the body as a way to fight infection. Furthermore, the hydrogen peroxide can then oxygenate tissues. Since hydrogen peroxide and ozone occur naturally, they cannot be patented. That may be one big reason why large formal medical studies have not been performed
there is no financial interest.

I am aware that there are supplements that reportedly increase oxygenation of our systems:
Need Extra Oomph? Whether these are effective, I do not have any experience. When they comment on the pulse oximeterthis is the same as I mention later that I did with oral hydrogen peroxide. Certainly, you are talking about a supplement that costs more than hydrogen peroxide but at the same time may be more convenient for some to take. My only comment is that I have no personal experience with these Vitamin O supplements, but I have worked with hydrogen peroxide, both by intravenous administration and orally, and ozone with joint injections and intravenous use.

During my surgical career, I was always on guard to prevent postoperative wound infections in my patients. Moving on to this area lets us define two classes of bacteria. The first is aerobic-- those that thrive in oxygen, and the second group is anaerobic-- those that thrive in the absence of oxygen. The good bacteria which maintain our health are primarily aerobic. The bad bacteria which can interfere with our health are primarily anaerobic. The treatment of surgical infections, particularly those following operations on the gastrointestinal tract, have focused on the development of antibiotics with specific activity against anaerobic bacteria.

Something that came up while I was practicing surgery was the use of 100% oxygen for three hours after an operation. Studies show that this measure alone decreased the rate of wound infections by 35%. Oxygen is very inexpensive.

Hydrogen peroxide has similar effects. There is an increase in oxygen saturation in the blood after oral ingestion or IV infusion. I showed an increase in my oxygen saturation using a probe (an oxygen saturation monitor) on my finger. A few drops of 35% hydrogen peroxide increased my oxygen saturation for 45 minutes after oral ingestion. But it is more than that. Hydrogen peroxide may increase the activity of catalase enzyme systems, which are involved in many aspects of our normal metabolism. This may be an important aspect for the use of peroxide in detoxification.

Besides wound infections and respiratory conditions such as emphysema, let us talk about other infections.
Updates on Ebola and Ozone Therapy When I first read about Dr. Rowen traveling to Sierra Leone, my immediate reaction was one of excitement. What a tremendous idea to use intravenous ozone to fight Ebola! Ozone, of course, has tremendous antimicrobial properties. What is also interesting is that about three weeks after Dr. Rowen was asked to leave the country, a major pharmaceutical company announced development of an Ebola vaccine. This can now be sold at the expense of many billions of dollars.

The therapeutic options for use of hydrogen peroxide in other infections are numerous. I have had patients with upper respiratory infections use a vaporizer that contained peroxide and distilled water. When developing intravenous therapies, I realized that many patients do not have the time to come in and sit through an intravenous infusion on a regular basis. This is just not manageable for many with a busy career and schedule. I then began looking into the development of a regimen using oral peroxide that can be done on a daily basis. Not only is this useful in acute infections but it can also be used for acute and chronic symptoms resulting from cytomegalovirus and Epstein-Barr virus (chronic fatigue syndrome) and also Lyme disease.

Although Dr. Williams outlines a regimen for peroxide used orally:
The Many Benefits of Hydrogen Peroxide I prefer to evaluate the patient and help develop a personal routine specific for the individual. One thing to keep in mind are troublesome side-effects such as fever, aches, rash, or diarrhea. These symptoms are known as a Herxheimer reaction and simply represent the release of toxins. This may be seen in both acute and chronic conditions. It is very important that chemical and hormone balance first be established so that detoxification and fighting an infection can be done in a body that is functioning optimally.

Some basic guidelines to keep in mind are presented by Williams. This is meant to give general background information. It is important to use an experienced medical practitioner to develop a personal program. With hydrogen peroxide by mouth use glass vessels
no plastics. The protocol for oral use is always safest on an empty stomach. That is why my preference is ingestion on arising early morning. At this time, if your cells are mildly dehydrated they will pull the water and peroxide inside the cell for a maximum effect. Always avoid vitamin C, iron, and any fats on the stomach at the time peroxide is ingested.

There are a lot of potential uses for promoting health using peroxide and ozone. In the next informational email, I will discuss the use of oxygen therapy in detoxification.

Some examples of toxicity in our normal environment include the decrease in the oxygen level in cities because of air pollutants (drop in oxygen content of the air from normal 20% to less than 15%), chlorination of water, overheating foods during cooking, over processing of foods, and the use of synthetic fats. This decrease in oxygenation of tissues and subsequent decrease in enzyme activity enables toxins to accumulate in our body. The accumulation of toxins leads to signs and symptoms that society accepts as normal aging. I have seen patients on a hydrogen peroxide regimen that improve the appearance of their skin, have age spots fade, thicken their hair, reverse the gray in the hair, and show a definite trend in decreasing tissue levels of toxic heavy metals such as mercury. Remember the highly reactive nature of peroxide and ozone.
